NEW MARKET, Md. (WUSA9) — The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office have identified the three people, including an infant, who died after a shooting Wednesday night.
Officials say they are 40-year-old Benyam Asefa, 42-year-old Barbara Giomarelli, and 3-month-old Samuel Asefa. Authorities say that Giomarelli is an Italian citizen and Asefa is an American citizen. Both were scientists and had been working on medical research. According to the LinkedIn profiles, Barbara was a PhDresearcher at University of Maryland and had spent time at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology. Benyam, aslo known as Ben was a clinical immunologist who was a contractor supporting research at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a graduate of McGill University. The incident happened before 8:50 p.m. in the 6800 block of Woods Court in New Market, Md., officials say.
A five-year-old girl ran to a neighbor’s house and told the neighbors, who called police, according to officials. The girl and neighbor told deputies that the family members may be injured and in need of assistance.
When deputies entered the home they found a 40-year-old male, a 42-year-old woman and a boy less than 1 year old dead inside the home, say officials. Officials tell us that their injuries were consistent with gunshot wounds and that a handgun was found at the scene but that the wounds will have to be confirmed by autopsies. Officials say the girl was checked by EMS and was not harmed. The girl is now in child protective custody. She hid in the home when the incident occurred.
Police say they are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide confined to one family in one home.
Authorities say the family recently moved from Howard County and bought the house in New Market.
The three family members will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for autopsies.
